The Centro Gutenberg Reproduction Unit (URE Centro Gutenberg) is a fertility centre in Spain and a pioneer in its sector. They have been working in the field of assisted reproduction since 1987, and in 1989 they achieved the first IVF birth in Malaga. At present, URE Centro Gutenberg is the assisted reproduction centre that performs the highest number of treatments in all of Malaga (city and province). The clinic looks out onto a beach and is located 10-15 minutes’ walk from the city centre. There are two laboratories and one operating theatre. There are four spacious and comfortable recovery rooms, two double and two single, all en suite. In 2022, the clinic performed 994 treatment cycles, of which over 23% were donor egg cycles and more than 76% were IVF cycles with own eggs.
Dr. Claudio Alvarez Pinochet
Medical Team at URE Centro Gutenberg
The medical director is Dr. Claudio Alvarez Pinochet. He has a degree in Medicine and Surgery (University of Chile) specialising in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, and a Master’s in Human Reproduction (University of Valencia). Dr. Alvarez has spent more than 15 years working both in Chile and in Spain and previously worked at the Valencian Institute for Infertility (IVI) for 7 years. Since 2010 he has worked at the URE Centro Gutenberg and became its medical director in 2012. As the author of numerous articles of scientific and medical interest such as “Dopamine agonist cabergoline reduces hemoconcentration and ascitys in hyperstimulated women undergoing assisted reproduction”, Dr. Alvarez is a regular speaker at both national and international conferences and meetings. Specifically, he spoke at the ESHRE Conference in 2006 and was pre-selected for the “Promising Young Clinician Award”. He is a member of the Spanish Fertility Society and specifically forms part of the Endocrinology Interest Group.
The medical team at the clinic is well-knit – there are 3 doctors in total and 5 embryologists. The senior embryologist has 31 years of experience and is ESHRE accredited. There is a Patient Support Team that helps patients from abroad. You won’t have problems communicating as the staff speak English and there is a team on hand for translation of other languages. The clinic has ISO accreditation ISO 9001:2015 that is valid till 26/12/2024.

IVF with Own Eggs
The advertised cost of IVF using own eggs is 3,900 Euros. This includes:
- Ultrasounds (unlimited) and hormone analysis (unlimited)
- Operating room
- Anaesthesia
- Egg collection
- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
- Cultivation to blastocyst
- Embryo transfer
- First pregnancy ultrasound (confirmation of heartbeat and gestational sac).
IVF with donor eggs
The advertised price of egg donation treatment is 6,500 Euros. It includes:
- Donor testing and genetic markers
- Ultrasounds (unlimited) and hormone analysis (unlimited)
- Selection, preparation and egg donor’s ovarian stimulation
- Operating room and follicular egg retrieval for the egg donor
- Financial compensation for the egg donor
- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
- Cultivation to blastocyst
- Preparation of the recipient (ultrasounds and analyses for the cycle)
- Embryo transfer
- Anaesthesia
- First pregnancy ultrasound (confirmation of heartbeat and gestational sac).

The first consultation is free. The Embryoscope costs 300 Euros. Sperm freezing costs 150 Euros and embryo freezing costs 500 Euros. The cost of a frozen embryo transfer cycle is 1,000 Euros. The clinic does not offer egg sharing.
ROPA (reciprocal IVF) and Social Freezing
At URE Gutenberg, lesbian couples can undergo ROPA (reciprocal IVF) at the cost of 5,250 Euros. If you are interested in egg freezing and storing your gametes, freezing costs 2,300 Euros and includes 5 years of storage and then it is 300 Euros per year for storing your frozen eggs.
Genetic Testing – PGT-A
- In Vitro Fertilization – Intracytoplasmic Microinjection– PGS 24 chromosomes + Robertsonian translocation chromosomes (S/P): PGT-A – the price range is 5,800-6,800 Euros* (the price depends on the number of embryos biopsied).
- In Vitro Fertilization – Intracytoplasmic Microinjection PGS 24 chromosomes + translocation chromosomes, reciprocal or inversion: PGT-SR: 6,200 – 8,000 Euros* (the price depends on the number of embryos biopsied).

URE Centro Gutenberg Success Rates 2022
At the Centro Gutenberg Reproduction in 2022, the own eggs clinical pregnancy success rate per embryo transfer was 47.07% and it varied depending on the age of the woman:
- women under 35 years old – 45.65%
- women aged 35-39 – 39.16%
- women over 40 – 28.84%.
The egg donation clinical pregnancy success rate per embryo transfer was 68.27%, the clinical pregnancy success rate for frozen embryo transfer (FET) was 50.91% and the embryo donation clinical pregnancy success rate was 45%.
The clinic submits the results to the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF). In 2022, 100% of the embryo transfers were done at the blastocyst stage, on day 5 of embryo development. The multiple birth rate in 2022 was 4.98% with the average number of embryos transferred – 1.12%.

Who Attends?
At present, URE Centro Gutenberg is the assisted reproduction centre that performs the highest number of treatments in all of Malaga (city and province). Of the international patients who attend URE CENTRO GUTENBERG, 83% are Spanish, and 15% come from abroad. To cater for the needs of patients from various countries the staff at the clinic speak English, Spanish, French and Italian.

Clinic Location
The clinic is located beach-front, within 10-15 minutes walk to the city centre. Only 11 km from AGP Malaga airport, and 3 km to Maria Zambrano Train Station. On request, the clinic’s International Department can help you organise the airport pickup at the cost of EUR 16.90. If you prefer to reach the clinic on your own, the easiest and fastest way is by taxi. You would pay EUR 20-25 maximum. The cheapest option is to travel by bus and it only costs about EUR 3. Take bus number 19. It takes about 30-40 minutes to get to the clinic depending on the traffic. There are buses every 30 minutes approximately. Get off at the Paseo del Parque bus stop which is the closest to the clinic. Another option is to take the train. It only takes 13 minutes to reach Malaga city centre from Malaga Airport. The train will take you to Maria Zambrano Station and from there you can either take a taxi or a bus (number 3) and it will take you directly to the clinic. URE Centro Gutenberg has preferential agreements with some hotels and rental apartments. Please ask the coordinators for more details.
