Barbados Fertility Centre is located just outside Bridgetown which is the capital of Barbados. Barbados is an island in the Caribbean which is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east, and the calm Caribbean Sea on the south and west coasts. Barbados Fertility Centre was opened in 2002 and is a private clinic. The total number of treatment cycles undertaken in 2016 was 500 of which 30% were egg donation cycles.
The clinic is a renovated plantation house that has been refurbished to include a state of the art laboratory, operating theatre, recovery suite, scan rooms and consulting rooms. There is an onsite spa where patients can enjoy massage, reflexology, acupuncture and counselling to understand the emotion associated with IVF treatment. There is one laboratory and one theatre and a 4-bed recovery suite.
The Medical Director is Dr. Juliet Skinner. She is Barbadian by birth and won the Barbados Scholarship to train in medicine at Trinity College in Dublin. Dr. Skinner went on to specialise in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. She led the women’s services at The Coombe Women’s Hospital in Dublin where she took a special interest in reproductive treatments. She returned to Barbados in 2002 to offer IVF services to international patients from the tranquillity of her island home. There are two doctors in total and two embryologists as well as a host of support staff, nurses and coordinators. The senior embryologist is ESHRE accredited and was previously Lab Director at a large IVF centre in Athens. She has 25 years of experience.
All the staff speak English as this is their official language but they have staff who can translate for other nationalities.
The clinic has JCI accreditation which is the Gold standard for clinic approval in the USA. All US clinics strive to attain this standard of accreditation and involves inspections and strict compliance. Barbados Fertility Centre also has ASRM Centre of Nursing Excellence accreditation.

Success Rates 2016
For Egg Donation treatment the clinical pregnancy rate is very good at 75%.
For IVF/ICSI using own eggs, the clinical pregnancy rate depends on the age of the woman.
- For women less than 35 years it was 67%
- For women between 35-37 years it was 66%
- For women between 38-40 years it was 46%
For frozen embryo transfer, the clinical pregnancy rate was 46%.
The day of embryo transfer is dependent on the specifics of individual cases – the age of patient and the quality of the embryos.
An average of 2 embryos was transferred. The clinic does not record live births therefore no multiple birth figure is available. However, they recently celebrated their 2000th live birth.

Cost of Treatments
The advertised cost of egg donation treatment is 7250 USD. The advertised price of IVF with own eggs is 6000 USD. This price does not include ICSI, medication, sperm freezing, blood tests or extended culture to blastocyst.
It does include:
- The first consultation which is 45 minute phone call with a doctor
- Embryo freezing including storage for 1 year,
- Ultrasounds, theatre charges, anaesthetic charges, doctors’ fees and one day in clinic lasting up to 4 hours.
The clinic offers both known donation and anonymous donation. The clinic specialises in running their own in-house donor egg programme. The majority of the local population i.e. 97% is of Afro Caribbean descent, so couples from the UK or USA who need a black donor are able to find a suitable match with no waiting time.
