Founded in 1997, the Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions” has supported thousands of families on their journey to parenthood.
The clinic was established by Dr Gints Treijs, a pioneer of reproductive medicine in Latvia. More than three decades ago, he introduced the first ICSI procedure in the country, marking the beginning of modern assisted reproduction in Latvia. In recognition of his contribution to the field, Dr Treijs is an Honorary Member of the Latvian Human Reproduction Society.
Since 2025, the clinic has been led by Dr Zane Vītiņa, an experienced IVF specialist with strong recognition across Europe. She serves as Clinic Director and Chair of the Board of the Latvian Society of Reproduction. Her dedication to supporting families has been acknowledged by the Latvian Ministry of Health, which awarded her a Certificate of Appreciation for her contribution to addressing demographic challenges both nationally and internationally.
In 2024 alone, Embrions carried out 799 treatment cycles, including 754 IVF cycles using patients’ own eggs and 245 egg donation cycles — reflecting the clinic’s extensive clinical experience.
Embrions welcomes a diverse group of patients, including single women and female same-sex couples. The clinic also offers treatment to patients living with HIV or hepatitis B or C, both women and men. In such cases, patients are required to provide a certificate from an infectious disease specialist confirming their diagnosis and medical stability. For chronic HBV, HCV, or HIV infections, an additional co-payment of €200 applies for ICSI treatment. For hepatitis B or C, the certificate must confirm that the infection is chronic, stable, and not in an acute phase.
There is no strict upper age limit for treatment. While women up to 55 years of age are generally accepted, every case is evaluated individually, with careful consideration of the patient’s overall health and wellbeing. The Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions” is housed in its own private three-storey building, designed to ensure comfort, discretion, and patient privacy. The day hospital is located on the first floor, while doctors’ consultation rooms are situated on the third floor. The clinic is fully accessible for patients with mobility impairments.
The interior has been thoughtfully designed to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere. On the third floor, waiting areas are arranged to offer patients individual and discreet spaces before their appointments. The clinic also features unique artworks by Latvian artists, adding warmth and character to the bright, comfortable surroundings — helping patients feel at ease, even when visiting with small children.
“Embrions” includes one fully equipped laboratory, two operating theatres, and five private single recovery rooms to ensure a safe and comfortable experience throughout treatment.

At Embrions, patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of specialists who work closely together under one roof. The clinic brings together experts in reproductive medicine, gynecology, embryology, endocrinology, urology, and surgery, ensuring coordinated and comprehensive care at every stage of treatment.
Dr Zane Vītiņa (pictured above) serves as CEO and Chief Physician of Embrions and has more than two decades of experience in fertility care. As a specialist in gynecology, obstetrics, and reproductive medicine, she develops individualized treatment strategies tailored to each patient’s needs. Her expertise includes medical therapies, minimally invasive procedures, IVF treatment, pregnancy supervision, and gynecological ultrasound diagnostics.
Dr Vītiņa is also Chair of the Board of the Latvian Society of Reproduction. She consults in English, Latvian, and Russian. Due to her extensive experience and leadership role, appointment availability may be limited.
Male Factor
Male reproductive health is given equal attention. Dr Andris Ābele (pictured above), a urologist and andrologist certified by the European Academy of Andrology, provides comprehensive diagnostics and treatment for male infertility. He also performs specialized surgical procedures when indicated.
The clinic offers advanced semen analysis, including spermogram, MAR test, HBA test, DNA fragmentation testing, and oxidative stress assessment. For international patients, diagnostic procedures are carefully scheduled to ensure efficient treatment planning.
Endocrinology and Hormonal Balance
Hormonal regulation plays a crucial role in fertility outcomes. At Embrions, experienced endocrinologists work alongside reproductive specialists to evaluate and manage hormonal factors that influence ovarian stimulation, egg quality, sperm production, implantation, and pregnancy development.
- Dr Sabīne Upmale-Engela (pictured above) specializes in disorders of the endocrine system, including thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, pancreatic, ovarian, and testicular conditions. She also treats metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity and has a particular focus on the hormonal aspects of infertility.
- Dr Eva Barkāne (pictured above) focuses on gynecological endocrinology, managing hormonal imbalances such as hyperprolactinemia, PCOS, hirsutism, and androgen-related conditions. Her expertise also includes hormonal and immunological approaches to infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, prenatal monitoring, and gynecological ultrasound diagnostics.

Embryo Donation Options
At Embrions, patients can choose embryo donation as a treatment option.
Embryos may come from:
- Previous patients who have donated their embryos to help other families
- Double donation (both egg and sperm from carefully selected donors)
All embryos are already created and frozen, which means there is no waiting time.
Ready Frozen Embryo (Double Donation) – €2,500

These embryos were created using both donor eggs and donor sperm from screened and qualified donors.

These embryos were donated by former patients who chose to support other families. Only embryos that meet strict medical and screening criteria are offered for treatment.

PGT-A testing checks the number of chromosomes in the embryo, which may reduce the risk of genetic abnormalities and improve implantation chances.
Donor Matching
All egg and sperm donors are carefully selected by the medical team. Matching is done individually — without AI systems — based on physical characteristics and compatibility.
Patients can receive information about the donor’s:

Donors are available from European and Scandinavian backgrounds, and embryo donation is available without waiting time.

Oocyte Activation – €230
This may be recommended for women of advanced reproductive age or for couples who have experienced fertilisation problems or poor embryo development in previous cycles.
Special Embryo Culture Medium (SAGE 1-Step™ GM-CSF) – €210
For patients who have experienced repeated implantation failure, embryos can be cultured or thawed in a specialised medium designed to support embryo development.
Advanced Laboratory Technologies
The clinic uses modern laboratory technology, including:
- Embryoscope Time-Lapse incubator for continuous embryo monitoring
- Advanced sperm preparation using a micro-membrane chamber
Genetic Testing Options
Available tests include:
- PGT-A (chromosome screening)

Egg freezing (also known as social freezing) is available for women who wish to preserve their fertility for the future.

At Embrions, pregnancy rates per single embryo transfer were:
- Women under 35: 70%
- Women aged 35–40: 54%
- Women over 40: 38%
Other results:
- Frozen embryo transfer (FET): 69.1%
- Embryo donation: 64%
For donor egg treatment, the overall pregnancy rate per embryo transfer was 77%
- 75% with fresh donor eggs
- 78% with frozen donor eggs
These results reflect one embryo transfer, not multiple attempts combined. The clinic usually transfers one embryo at a time to support a safer single-embryo approach.
The multiple pregnancy rate in 2024 was 2.54%.

Who Attends the Clinic
In 2024, the majority of our patients were local families, with 70% coming from Latvia. We also welcomed 10% of patients from Lithuania and 9% from the United Kingdom. The remaining 11% travelled to us from countries including the USA, Canada, Germany and Romania. This diverse international community reflects both our strong local presence and the trust patients place in us from abroad.
Clinic Location
The Center of Reproductive Medicine “Embrions” is located at Tālivalža Street 2A in Riga. The clinic is situated outside the busy city centre, in a quiet and peaceful area, offering patients a discreet and comfortable environment during their treatment journey.
The clinic is easily accessible. A taxi ride from Riga International Airport takes approximately 30–35 minutes, depending on traffic and the time of day. For those using public transport, the clinic is conveniently located near Brīvības Street, one of Riga’s main streets, with good transport connections.
For international patients, accommodation options are available nearby. Just 200 metres from the clinic, there are comfortable apartments with all necessary amenities, as well as several hotels within easy walking distance.
