Some clinics are impressive because of their technology. Some because of their size. Barcelona IVF impressed me even before I was able to fully experience it, with a completely different reason – the design.
When I arrived, I actually paused for a moment outside the building. The architecture is quite surreal and striking, and once you step inside it almost feels like walking into a planetarium rather than a medical centre.
The interior design has even won architectural awards, and it’s easy to see why. Everything feels carefully thought through – from the lighting to the flow of the rooms. It’s one of the most beautifully designed fertility clinics I’ve visited so far.
But as always, a beautiful space only matters if the people inside it match the atmosphere.

Barcelona IVF is well located within Barcelona and focuses heavily on treating international patients. Spain has long been one of the most popular destinations for fertility treatment in Europe.
The clinic is led by Medical Director Dr Raúl Olivares and a team of experienced fertility specialists, embryologists and patient coordinators who guide patients through every step of the process.
One interesting aspect of Barcelona IVF is that they operate their own donor unit within the clinic. However, it has its own entrance and dedicated spaces to ensure privacy for donors. This setup can also help reduce waiting times and allows the clinic to coordinate fresh donation cycles when appropriate.
The clinic itself feels more like a boutique medical centre than a hospital environment – elegant, quiet and carefully organised.

Arrival at the clinic
Inside, the reception and waiting areas are surprisingly calm. Instead of one large open waiting room, there are smaller seating areas and little nooks that give patients more privacy.
The staff were very friendly from the moment I arrived, and everything felt organised and welcoming.
The design of the space really contributes to the experience. The lighting is soft, the architecture is curved and almost futuristic, and the whole place feels calm rather than clinical.
It’s one of those clinics where the environment alone probably helps lower stress levels before appointments.
Medical consultation
Before my consultation, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr Raúl Olivares, the clinic’s Medical Director. It was very clear that patient care is something he takes seriously. He spoke about the philosophy behind the clinic and their approach to supporting patients throughout what can be a very emotional process.
My medical consultation was with Dr Alejandra Casas. She was warm, attentive and very easy to talk to.
We walked through a hypothetical scenario for my treatment, discussing what the next steps might look like and how a treatment plan would be structured. The consultation felt thorough without being overwhelming, and she explained things clearly.
The ultrasound itself was quick and comfortable, and the blood test was equally smooth – small details, but ones that matter a lot when you’re a patient.
The IVF laboratory
I was also able to tour the embryology lab, which is always one of the most fascinating parts of these visits.
The first thing that stood out was how active it was. There was a real sense of a team at work – embryologists moving between stations, procedures being prepared, and everything running smoothly.
The lab is very well equipped and clearly organised around precise processes and careful handling of embryos.
One particularly interesting thing I was shown was a recording of an embryo biopsy procedure, which is performed when embryos are tested genetically. Seeing how delicate and precise that process is gives you a lot of appreciation for the level of expertise involved.
Final thoughts
Barcelona IVF left a strong impression on me.
It’s visually stunning, and it’s impossible to ignore. The architecture alone makes it one of the most striking clinics I’ve visited.
But beyond the design, it’s the combination of experienced doctors, an active and well-equipped lab, and the clinic’s own donor program that really shapes the experience here.
It feels like a boutique clinic – elegant, structured and very focused on patient care. You can tell that everybody receives personal treatment there and patients aren’t being viewed as just numbers.
For patients considering treatment in Spain, particularly those interested in donor programs or looking for a clinic that combines medical expertise with a very carefully designed environment, Barcelona IVF is definitely worth exploring.
