IVF Abroad Packages: What’s Included and How to Compare
IVF packages abroad can make treatment costs easier to understand, but the advertised price does not always represent the final amount you will pay.
There is no standard definition of an IVF package. Two clinics may advertise treatment at a similar price while including very different laboratory procedures, medication, embryo freezing or follow-up transfers.
The most useful comparison is therefore not the headline price, but the expected total cost of the treatment you are likely to need.

Basic or single-cycle packages
A basic IVF package normally covers the main stages required to reach embryo transfer. However, medication, embryo freezing, storage or a future frozen embryo transfer may be excluded.
This can make a lower initial price considerably more expensive if additional treatment is required.
Multi-cycle packages
Multi-cycle programmes can include several IVF attempts for one upfront fee.

IVF refund programmes
Refund or money-back programmes typically combine several treatment attempts with a full or partial refund if the programme does not achieve its defined outcome.
They should not be interpreted as a guarantee that IVF will result in a baby.
The financial guarantee relates to the refund conditions.
Some programmes define success as reaching a clinical pregnancy, while others use live birth as the final outcome. This distinction should be confirmed before payment.
Is IVF medication included?
Medication is one of the most important costs to check.
The amount required depends on the stimulation protocol and individual response, which means two patients having the same IVF package may have different medication costs.

Embryo freezing and future transfers
Good-quality embryos that are not transferred during the initial IVF cycle can be frozen for future treatment.
This means a successful egg retrieval may lead to more than one embryo transfer without requiring another ovarian stimulation and egg collection. However, several additional costs may apply.
A package including embryo freezing but excluding a future frozen embryo transfer does not cover the full cost of using those embryos.
Are IVF add-ons included?
Packages may contain additional tests or procedures such as:
- time-lapse embryo imaging
- PICSI
- IMSI
- assisted hatching
- EmbryoGlue
- freeze-all strategies
- additional embryo or endometrial tests
An IVF package should not be considered better simply because it contains more add-ons.
The UK’s fertility regulator defines treatment add-ons as optional treatments or tests offered in addition to established fertility treatment and advises patients to consider the quality of evidence, potential risks and additional cost before agreeing to them.
Costs usually outside the clinic package
Treatment abroad also creates costs that are not normally part of the advertised clinic price.

Which IVF package offers the best value?
There is no package that is best for every patient.
A single-cycle package may be suitable when only one treatment attempt is planned. A more comprehensive package may provide greater cost certainty when medication, freezing or additional transfers are likely.
Multi-cycle and refund programmes can reduce some of the financial uncertainty associated with repeated treatment, but they normally have qualification criteria and specific definitions of success.
The most useful comparison therefore looks beyond the headline price and asks:
What is included, what could realistically be needed later, and what would the complete treatment pathway cost?
