IVF Journey at Cyprus IVF Hospital – Meet the Doctor

How long have you been treating IVF patients?

I have dedicated 15 years to treating IVF patients, starting in 2008.

How long have you been working with Cyprus IVF Hospital?

As the founder of Cyprus IVF Hospital, I am proud to have been leading the institution for the past 15 years.

Why did you choose the IVF field to work in?

I have been working as an OB/GYN for 20 years since I decided to start a new career as IVF specialist in 2008.

I chose to work in the field of IVF because I am deeply passionate about helping individuals and couples navigate the complexities of fertility challenges. The profound impact that assisted reproductive technologies can have on people’s lives, coupled with my now almost 30 years of background in obstetrics and gynecology, motivated me to contribute to the advancement of reproductive medicine. I find immense fulfillment in being part of a team that empowers individuals to achieve their dream of building a family. This field allows me to merge my scientific knowledge with a compassionate approach to patient care, and witnessing the positive outcomes reinforces my dedication to this meaningful work.

Do you know how many couples you have helped to have a baby?

While I’ve never kept a precise count, hospital statistics indicate that over 10,000 individuals, including couples and single women, have benefited from my expertise throughout my career.

What do you think your greatest achievement has been during your career?

Witnessing the joy of patients holding their babies, especially in challenging or impossible cases, constitutes my most significant achievement. The emotional impact of making the seemingly impossible a reality is beyond words.

What makes Cyprus IVF Hospital different from the other IVF clinics in North Cyprus?

One word encapsulates our distinction: “team.” Our exceptional facilities, operating under Cyprus Central Hospital, coupled with top-quality infrastructure, are complemented by an expert team that delivers a comprehensive 360-degree service, ensuring optimal results.

Do you specialise in a certain area, e.g. male factor, multiple IVF failures or any other? Do you have many patients with these issues?

We specialize in advanced maternal age, advanced male factor, and cases involving multiple IVF failures. Our expertise is supported by personalized medical protocols and procedures, including donor programs if necessary. Our daily exposure to diverse cases globally contributes to continuous growth in our expertise areas. The majority of our patients are of advanced maternal age, above 45.

What advice would you give to couples thinking about starting treatment abroad while they are looking for a clinic?

Trust is paramount; if you don’t feel comfortable, delay the process.

Ensure comprehensive arrangements for a smooth treatment journey. Anticipating and addressing potential obstacles ensures a stress-free experience.

Normally, your first consultation with patients would be in person. Do you think “online consultations” may be valuable enough for both the patient and yourself (the doctor)?

While our team generally conducts video calls with patients to gather their all related data, I do also attend to many calls when I deem it necessary by carving out time within my schedule for thorough attention and support.  This allows for a comprehensive review before providing personalized care to our patients.

What is the protocol for patients with multiple IVF failures? Do they receive personalized treatment due to previous failures and issues?

Protocols are created based on the unique circumstances of each patient. From male factor issues to egg quality concerns or problems related to the uterus or the immune system, we identify the root cause and implement a personalized protocol for all our patients.

Can you tell us, in short, about the most difficult IVF case you have had that ended in a successful birth? What made a difference in that case?

One remarkable case involved a 48-year-old German patient with 17 (!!) IVF failures, an endometrium problem, and a husband who had frozen sperm before cancer treatment. Through an extensive protocol and the transfer of three embryos, the patient, with a unique medical history, achieved a successful birth to twins on the first attempt.

If you could give a word of advice to a colleague who is a young fertility doctor, what would it be?

My advice to a young fertility doctor would be to cultivate a deep sense of empathy and understanding for the emotional journey that patients embark on. Infertility is a delicate and often challenging experience, and as a physician, it’s crucial to not only provide medical expertise but also to offer compassionate support. Stay committed to continuous learning, keep abreast of the latest advancements in reproductive medicine, and build a collaborative network with colleagues. The field of fertility medicine is evolving, and by embracing innovation and maintaining a patient-centric approach, you can make a lasting impact on the lives of those you serve.
