Behind IVF Clinic Doors: My Visit to CEFER Barcelona, Spain
Some clinics feel new, modern, built around trends. CEFER feels well established and confident.
Not in an old-fashioned way, but in a way where you can tell they’ve seen a lot, done a lot, and shaped quite a bit of what fertility treatment looks like today.
Walking in, I was curious to see how a clinic with this much history actually translates into the patient experience.
About CEFER
CEFER is one of the longest-standing fertility centres in Spain, originally founded in 1977 as the country’s first sperm bank. Over the years, it has played a significant role in the development of reproductive medicine; including early IVF techniques, egg banking, and the development of the ROPA method for female couples.
That history is still very present in how the clinic operates today.
One thing that stands out is their strong scientific foundation. The embryologist, Fernando Marina, is also the Managing Director, which is quite unique. It means that many decisions within the clinic are guided directly by lab expertise, not just clinical or operational considerations.
Another important difference is how patient care is structured – here, the doctor is your main point of contact throughout the journey. Rather than being passed between multiple people, your case feels more consistently overseen, which can make a big difference, especially for more complex situations.
The clinic is located in Barcelona, which is not only a beautiful city but also very well connected. It’s easy to get to from the airport, which matters more than you realise when you’re travelling for treatment.

Arrival at the clinic
The clinic itself is bright, calm and relatively small; which I personally liked.
It doesn’t feel overwhelming. It feels manageable. The kind of place where you can quickly understand where everything is and how things work.
The atmosphere is quite relaxed, and the team was welcoming without being overly formal.
Medical consultation
One thing that stood out in the process at CEFER is how much emphasis they place on a thorough medical evaluation – including the male factor.
A consultation with an andrologist is a standard part of the journey here, which isn’t always the case in every clinic. It reflects a more balanced approach to fertility, rather than focusing primarily on the female side.
My consultation felt detailed and structured, with a clear focus on understanding the full picture before moving forward with any treatment plan.
Another element I really appreciated is that I was able to follow a couple going through their own journey at the clinic. Seeing that real-life experience added a completely different layer to the visit – and if you’re curious, you can see that part in the video.
The IVF laboratory
As expected from a clinic with such a strong scientific background, the lab is a central part of the experience.
It’s well equipped, including time-lapse embryo monitoring, which allows embryos to be observed continuously without being removed from their environment.
What made this visit particularly interesting was the opportunity to also see the genetic lab they work with – Dina Science.
Being able to visit it and see how closely the teams collaborate gave a much clearer understanding of how genetic testing is integrated into the treatment process. It didn’t feel like an external service; it felt like an extension of the clinic’s work.
CEFER – Final thoughts
CEFER feels like a clinic built on experience.
Not just years of operation, but real contribution to how fertility treatment has evolved – from sperm banking to egg banking to techniques that are now widely used across the industry.
It’s not the biggest clinic, and it doesn’t try to impress with scale. Instead, it leans into what it does best: medical expertise, scientific grounding, and continuity of care.
Having the embryologist as Managing Director, a strong focus on male factor, and the doctor leading the patient journey all contribute to a very structured and medically driven approach.
At the same time, the clinic itself remains calm, bright and approachable.
