Behind IVF Clinic Doors: My Visit to emBIO Clinic, Greece
Some clinics are nestled inside hospitals. Some share a floor with other practices. EmBIO has its own building. That tells you something straight away. This is a clinic that has grown into itself, three floors, its own address, its own identity. About 25 minutes from Athens airport, in the quiet leafy suburb of Chalandri, it sits as a standalone presence. Not trying to be anything other than what it is. And what it is, is very busy.
About the clinic
EmBIO was founded in 1996 by Dr Thanos Paraschos, a name that carries real weight in the world of reproductive medicine. Before building EmBIO, he was part of the team at Hammersmith Hospital in London that performed the world’s first preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) in 1989, a landmark moment that changed the possibilities of IVF forever.
That history followed him back to Greece, and the clinic reflects it. EmBIO holds the record for several firsts in the country: the first birth from a frozen egg, the first donor egg IVF pregnancy, and the first IVF-vitrification. It was also the first clinic in Greece to receive ISO certification and it continues to hold it today.
Over nearly three decades, more than 30,000 babies have been born through EmBIO. Success rates reach 67% on the first IVF attempt and up to 84% by the second. The infrastructure matches the ambition: two IVF laboratories and three operating theatres, all under one roof.
Arrival at the clinic
Walking into EmBIO, the first thing you notice is the energy, and there’s a lot of it.
The clinic is clearly busy. In the waiting areas you see a mix of people: mothers who have already made it through this journey, and women and couples who are still somewhere in the middle of theirs. There’s something quietly powerful about that. It’s a reminder of both what’s possible, and how many people are navigating this road.
The space itself is sober in its colours and design — serious, considered, not trying to dazzle. It doesn’t have the feel of a modern boutique clinic. It feels more like a place that has been doing this long enough that it doesn’t need to impress with aesthetics. The track record speaks for itself.
Medical consultation
My consultation was with Dr Thanos Paraschos, and I came away feeling like I could have listened to him for hours.
His depth of knowledge is immediately apparent, not in a way that feels overwhelming, but in a way that makes you lean in. He moves between the history of IVF, the specifics of treatment, and the nuances of individual cases with an ease that only comes from decades of experience. From his time in London to what he has built here, every part of the conversation felt grounded in something real.
Two things stayed with me after we spoke.
The first was something he said about success rates: that how much a woman trusts her clinic also plays a role in the outcome. It’s not a throwaway line. Coming from someone with his record, it reframes the relationship between patient and clinic entirely.
The second was learning how EmBIO came to be. Dr Paraschos built it with his wife, who is the Lab Director and lead embryologist (Dr Dina Katrania). A family business – dedicated to helping other people build their own families. I found that genuinely moving.
During my visit, I also had the chance to hear from a patient who had been through the journey herself. She had tried multiple times at other clinics, without success. She came to EmBIO at 40 years old, and on her very first treatment there, she got pregnant. She now has her baby in her arms, as she says “her miracle”. Hearing her tell that story in person added a completely different dimension to everything else I had seen and heard that day. Numbers and credentials are one thing. A woman holding her child is another.
The lab
The lab visit brought me face to face with three embryologists, including the Lab Director herself.
What struck me most was how much they all clearly love what they do. There was an energy in that room, an enthusiasm that didn’t feel performed. One of the embryologists walked me through every piece of equipment with real patience and generosity, making sure I understood what each thing did and why it mattered, without ever making me feel like I was asking too much. That kind of openness is rarer than it should be.
With this laboratory and a team that has been working together for years, the infrastructure here is serious. You can feel the experience that has accumulated within those walls.
Final thoughts
EmBIO is not trying to be everything to everyone. It knows exactly what it is, and that confidence is one of its most compelling qualities.
This is a clinic built on three decades of doing this work, led by a founder who was present at the very beginning of modern IVF history. The credentials are real, the volume is significant, the infrastructure is complete, and the price point is notably more accessible than smaller boutique clinics.
The trade-off, as with any high-volume clinic, is scale. This is not the place where everyone will know your name before you walk through the door. But if what you’re looking for is legacy, expertise, and a full-service offering under one roof, EmBIO is a very strong choice.
